Article 160(2) with the Constitution of Malaysia describes various conditions used in the Constitution. It includes an important impact on Islam in Malaysia as well as the Malay people due to its definition of a Malay person. This article defines a Malay like a person who fulfills two sets of criteria: First, the person must be one who professes as a Muslim, constantly speaks the Malay terminology, and sticks to Malay customs. Second, the person should have been:

(i) (a) domiciled in the Federation or Singapore on Merdeka Day, (b) born inside the Federation or Singapore before Merdeka Day, or (c) born before Merdeka Working day of parents certainly one of whom was created in the Federation or Singapore, (collectively, the " Merdeka Day population" ) or perhaps (ii) is actually a descendent of the member of the Merdeka Working day population. Sabah: There is no equivalent description for local people of Sabah which for the reasons of the Constitution are " a competition indigenous to Sabah" (see clause 6 of Article 161A).
